AMIT

What is the AMIT Method?

AMIT is a revolutionary advancement in sports medicine. AMIT (Advanced Muscle Integration Technique) is a systematic treatment of common joint and muscle conditions experienced by active people without the need for drugs or surgery.

In the AMIT model, tight muscles are not the focus of treatment as they are in most therapies. The symptom of muscle tightness is created when a muscle or tissue is over loaded beyond its ability to handle the load (through an injury or overuse), then one or two things happen. The proprioceptors (position and pressure sensors) become inhibited causing the muscle to “give way” when loaded. We call this process neuroproprioceptive inhibition (NPI). This response is protective in nature and occurs in order to reduce the amount of damage to the tissue. If the load continues, the supporting tissue will tear.

This process is similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical circuit being overloaded and tripping to protect the system. Once this protective response occurs, the injured muscle stays inhibited (or turned off), and nearby tissues attempt to take on the added load in an adaptive process. If the adaptation is successful, the symptoms may disappear for a while until the adaptive tissues become over stressed and inhibited. The imbalance remains until such time as the underlying problem is identified and corrected. This situation is commonly diagnosed as tendonitis, bursitis, myofasciitis, or plantarfaciitis. By identifying these imbalances and correcting them using the AMIT therapies, healing and rehabilitation can take place rapidly without the need for drugs or surgery.

System adaptation leads to less efficient function. Creating a successful adaptation into other tissues or systems may actually hide symptoms. This may give one a false sense that healing is complete and full function has been restored. Acute injuries are treated at the injury site, but with chronic problems treatment is most often away from the site of symptoms or compensation and with the original site of stress.

After an AMIT evaluation has been completed. The muscles requiring treatment will have been determined, and a series of appointments will be scheduled according to the number of muscles requiring work. An AMIT session will focus on reactivating muscles to restore function; the amount of time to reactivate each muscle may vary depending on how the body responds to the reactivation. One muscle is reactivated per treatment, about a 10-15 minute session. To improve range of motion, strength, endurance and flexibility, a chiropractic adjustment is performed in conjunction with an AMIT session.
